Chuck Bednarik was a waist gunner on a B-24 bomber. Art Donovan served on the island of Saipan. Roger Staubach was a naval officer in Vietnam. From Rocky Bleier to Pat Tillman, many of professional football’s superstars were true American heroes who answered the call of duty during war. Three members of the NFL received our nation’s highest honor, the Medal of Honor during World War II.

GIs of the Gridiron is an inspiring patriotic documentary produced by the DAV that honors the contributions of football players who served in the military. Participating NFL teams across the nation air the film before and during ballgames. It’s also aired on the NFL Network and is used by teams during public appearances.

Additionally, many teams have partnered with the DAV to create player cards that feature information on supporting disabled veterans.

The DAV is reaching out to ensure the public understands the sacrifices veterans have made and continue to make to keep our nation free.
