The DAV is part of a continuing partnership with the National Football League, working
directly with NFL teams to provide player autograph cards and inspiring videos about
the military service of star players and how today’s NFL players are reaching out
to help the disabled veterans of our current wars.
“The Great American Team” tells the story of DAV and NFL working in partnership
to show appreciation for the service and sacrifice of our newest generation of veterans.
From visits to VA and military hospitals, to invitations to attend NFL events from
pre-season practices to the Super Bowl, the NFL and DAV assists wounded veterans
overcome their injuries and restore them to productive lives.
“GIs of the Gridiron” is an inspiring patriotic documentary produced by the DAV
to honors the contributions of football players who served in the military. The
video tells the stories of Chuck Bednarik, who was a waist gunner on a B-24 bomber
in World War II, Art Donovan, who served on the island of Saipan and Roger Staubach,
a naval officer in Vietnam. From Rocky Bleier, severely wounded in Vietnam, to the
death of Pat Tillman in Afghanistan, professional football’s superstars are true
American heroes who answered the call of duty during war. Three members of the NFL
received our nation’s highest honor, the Medal of Honor during World War II.
The DAV is reaching out to ensure the public understands the sacrifices veterans
from all walks in life have made and continue to make to keep our nation free.
